This small project was started on a non profit basis in November 2003. A group of Dutch ladies had the initiative to support 8 Namibian women by teaching them to sew anthroposophical dolls. By assisting them to produce dolls, they could start making a living of their own, support their families and even put their children through their schooling careers. After all these years, the members are still going strong!
Dolls
We have a small selection of dolls, suitable for children of very small age until schoolgoing kids.
0-3 years: The simple doll dress and the Big Mama are especially designed for them
3-8 years: The Sister and Baby on the back is an excellent playmate! The twin baby and the back baby are very nice small dolls that can travel with your child.
Beginning
Working from a members home in Okuryangava (an informal settlement in katutura, Windhoek) the group members were taught step by step to produce beautiful dolls for all ages. Without electricity, the ladies have handdriven sewing machines, which gives a truly new meaning to the label; Handmade in Namibia!
Today
The project now runs independently and all women are actively involved in the development of their products. They redesign and develop their own dolls and give them their unique character. Each lady puts her name on the tag together with a picture of herself, making each doll uniquely hers.
Meaning of MATUKONDJO
The name “Matukondjo” was found by the group members and gives expression to the life they live. It can be translated to “Life is a struggle, but we will not give up”. The project, due to its selfsufficient character, is wellknown in Namibia and continues to stand strong.
